Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

WHAT IS ETA

Electronic Travel Authorisation

An Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a digital entry permit that simplifies the travel process for eligible individuals. Instead of going through the lengthy steps of obtaining a traditional visa, travelers can complete the ETA application entirely online, making it faster and more convenient. Once granted, the ETA is electronically linked to your passport, allowing you to enter the country for various purposes, such as tourism, visiting family, business, or short-term study. The ETA typically allows multiple entries over a specific period, making it an ideal choice for those who travel frequently. It offers a more straightforward and efficient way to meet travel requirements.

Eligibility Based on Travel Purpose and Duration

Short-Term Visits

Travelers planning to visit the UK for short stays, such as tourism, business meetings, family visits, conferences, medical treatment, or short courses of up to six months, are required to obtain an ETA. This electronic authorisation is essential for anyone entering the UK for these purposes, regardless of the specific nature of their visit. Whether you’re exploring the sights, attending professional events, visiting loved ones, receiving medical care, or taking a short course, the ETA ensures that your entry into the UK is properly authorized and streamlined for stays of up to six months.

Transit Through the UK

Transit passengers from visa-waiver countries are required to have an ETA when passing through the UK, even if they remain within the airport and do not leave. This requirement applies to travelers with connecting flights or layovers in the UK on their way to another destination. Whether you're just stopping briefly or catching a connecting flight, having an ETA is mandatory for continuing your journey through the UK.

Who Does Not Need a UK ETA?

Not everyone needs a UK ETA. Certain groups are exempt due to the citizenship or the type of travel documents they hold.

Citizens from visa-exempt countries, except those specifically required to obtain an ETA, do not need this authorisation to enter the UK. Additionally, individuals with a valid visa or permission to live, work, or study in the UK are exempt from the ETA requirement. British and Irish passport holders are also exempt and do not need to apply for an ETA. Similarly, travelers coming from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man are not required to obtain an ETA for their stay in the UK. These exemptions ensure that certain travelers can enter the UK without the need for extra authorisation.

UK ETA Processing Time?

On time

Applicants usually receive their UK ETA decision within three working days after submitting their application. Depending on the specifics of each case, decisions can sometimes be made sooner. However, certain factors might extend the processing time beyond this period.

Delay

Processing times for a UK ETA may be extended under the following circumstances:

Additional Security Checks: Extra time may be needed if further verification or security assessments are necessary.
High Volume of Applications: Expect potential delays during high-demand periods or due to operational reasons.
Errors or Incompleteness: Applications with incorrect or incomplete information are likely to take longer to process.

Validity and Duration

Validity

2 Years

The UK ETA remains valid for two years from issuance and supports multiple entries. However, if the passport associated with the ETA expires before the two-year mark, the authorisation will be invalid. ETA holders should ensure they enter the UK before their ETA expires.

Duration of Stay

6 Months

ETA holders can stay in the UK for up to 6 months for purposes like tourism, visiting relatives or friends, business activities, or short-term studies. Travelers under the Creative Worker visa concession can remain in the UK for up to 3 months. Additionally, those on the Permitted Paid Engagement pathway are permitted a stay of up to 1 month.

Renewal

Extensions

The UK ETA cannot be extended or renewed once issued, as it is directly associated with the passport used in the original application. If the traveler's passport expires or they receive a new one, a fresh ETA application is required. Current regulations do not allow for renewing or extending the validity of an existing ETA.
